Students will love the engaging and interactive format of iMovie. You can make presentations, videos to introduce a topic, summary projects and many other things. I created a introductory video on Gandhi to get students interested in discussing him . My students were going to create their own iMovies but due to some last minute actions they were not allowed to do so. They were going to create their own iMovie on the life of Gandhi in which they could of focused on his life defining events and how he changed India. There are many great features on iMovie that allow you to make fun trailers as well as movies for larger projects. I enjoyed making mine and I know that students enjoy it as well.

EDpuzzle is a way to make watching a informational video more interactive for your students. There are many ways you can use this site. You can use it in class as by watching it as a whole class and add in quiz questions to check for comprehension as well as clipping out parts that may be redundant or just to shorten it to the key concepts. You may also assign it as a homework assignment as each student will be joined on your online class so you can check/grade their progress as well as assign due dates. You have access to an unlimited amount of video all over the web as well as being able to insert your own. You can then crop a video, add your voice to it and embed quizzes. This allows you to make sure that your students are not just watching a video but that they are being challenged by it and that they are getting every piece of quintessential information while also holding them accountable for their own learning. In my class I used this as a homework assignment for my AP students to get some extra information on Joseph Stalin that we did not have time for in class. Since the video counted as a homework grade and since there was a way to hold them accountable, more students watched the video then if I would have just assigned it to them like normal. They also gave feedback about how they liked that they knew what I wanted them to get out of the video based on the questions I had embedded. Overall this is a quick and easy to use tool that turns watching and analyzing a video into a 21st century skill. This was my first time creating an iBook. I kept mine pretty simple and made it more of an additional source or information for my students. This book is called Imperialism and has three chapters. The first focuses on what imperialism is. It gives students information, a introduction video, image slideshow and comprehension questions. Chapter 2 focuses on imperialism in Africa and also has comprehension questions. Chapter 3 does the same as chapter 2 but its focus is on India. I would like to keep working on these 3 chapters to put in more video links and links to other useful websites as well as primary source documents.
Schoology is a great way to manage your classroom but also a nice way to differentiate. One of the features on schoology allows you to individually assign items to your students. I like to use this in my class because I often assign the kids worksheets to see if they are grasping the material. Just giving the kid the worksheet on schoology is not necessarily fair to all of your students. What I like to do with the "individually assign" button is to give the students worksheet that go along with their reading level. It is the same material and the same questions just written at a level that I know they can comprehend. Since it is individually assigned and also on the computer there is discretion in the fact that you have manipulated the worksheets. The only downfall of this feature is it seems time consuming to individually assign to your students. When you create an assignment there will be a button that looks like 3 circles in the form of a triangle. Once you click on that you simply type in your students names and then click on it once you see their name. You can do more than one student at a time so I would consider grouping your students into levels and then assigning them their assignments that way. Hope this help with differentiating to our lower level readers as well as our advanced readers (:Everyone knows that Powerpoint is a simple to use and straightforward application for use in the classroom. But, with everyone using the same thing our student's are loosing interest in the mundane power points. In this blog post I will go over some of the presentation tools that I like to use that you can easily implement in your classroom. There are 4 that I am going to talk about in this blog and I will also provide you with a link to the presentation tool.
#1 Prezi. This is a simple to use presentation tool that most of your kids are already familiar with. The website lets you pick a layout or theme and then you just simply add your information. You can also add/delete slides as needed as well as reorder them in a way that makes sense to you. I like to use Prezi when they have a theme that relates to my topic for the day. Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmgF-dLXv58 #2 Canva. This website allows a website that allows you to create slides with built-in high resolutions images, vectors, and text effects. Most of the elements are free but they have extra ones that cost about $1.00. Once you sign up for Canva they will run you through a tutorial which is very helpful. This is also convenient because you can give your kids a link to the notes without having to upload them to schoology. Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqYti78riU8 #3 Google Slides. This may alarm you, but you may have held the secret to creating compelling slides without even knowing it. If you have a google account visit it now! At the top right hand corner, you will see an icon that looks like nine itty-bitty squares. Click it and visit Drive. Once inside your Drive, you will be able to create presentations with Google Slides. This is a simple step up from power point that allows you to share via link or attachment. Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsUX7Piez-0 #4 Powtoon. This is perfect for creating video presentations slightly more lively and charming than the standard PowerPoint. Whether its blend of cartoony assets and sprightly animations is the right thing for you is another question. You can keep it simple and make more standard presentations or spice them up by adding animations and cartoon like images. Tutorial: https://www.powtoon.com/tutorials/ |
